Miss Clare

Welcome to the St Matthew's Primary School Year 6 Class Page

At St Matthew's, we use Class Dojo as a parent/school communication tool. It will have all the most recent class work, updates, news and events. Please check this regularly.

Hello and welcome to Year 6!

Year 6 is an important year as the children get ready for their transition to high school.  We do our best to ensure all children are equipped for this big change.  In May, the children will sit their end of Key Stage 2 assessments and we will do our best to prepare the children through class work, booster sessions before and after school and during the school day where necessary.  The children are assessed in maths, reading and SPaG (spelling, punctuation and grammar).

PE

Our PE days are Wednesday and Thursday.  The children should come to school in full PE kit.  This will consist of black bottoms, a white t-shirt and a school jumper. Sensible footwear must be worn and long hair must be tied back.  Ensure that your child is not wearing any jewellery and if they are asthmatic an inhaler MUST be in school.

What will your child be learning?

Despite having SATs, we enjoy learning in other areas:

  • In science, we enjoy investigating in our units about electricity, the circulatory system, evolution and light. Also, we make links between our electricity unit and D&T.
  • As geographers, we learn about different regions in the UK and how to use ordinance survey maps, also we study South America and make comparisons between there and home.
  • As historians, we learn about World War I and we lead the whole school in the Remembrance service. As well as this, we are lucky enough to have a visit from a World War I soldier, William, he provides us with a first-hand account of life in World War I. As well as this, we learn about Crime and Punishment through the different eras of history.

After SATs we have lots of exciting things to look forward to, we head off to Robinwood on our residential, we put together an end of year show and then we end our time at St Matthew’s with a spectacle that is our leavers’ service.

During the year, we are visited by the Fire Service, the Youth Offending Team, and Freddie Fit too.  It is an action packed year, but one we hope the children will remember for a long time to come.?

Autumn Term dates for your diary:

Remembrance Service – 11th November at 2pm (In church)

World War I soldier visit – 17th November

Crucial Crew trip – 18th November

There is lots to be excited about!
