Welcome to the St Matthew's Primary School Year 6 Class Page
At St Matthew's, we use School Spider as a parent/school communication tool. It will have all the most recent class work, updates, news and events. Please check this regularly.
Hello and welcome to Year 6!
Year 6 is an important year as the children get ready for their transition to high school. We do our best to ensure all children are equipped for this big change. In May, the children will sit their end of Key Stage 2 assessments and we will do our best to prepare the children through class work, booster sessions before and after school and during the school day where necessary. The children sit assessment papers in reading, maths and SPaG (spelling, punctuation and grammar). As well as this, teacher assessments in writing and science are reported to the Standards and Testing Agency in June.
What will your child be learning?
Despite having SATs, we enjoy learning in other areas:
- In science, we enjoy investigating in our units about electricity, the circulatory system, evolution and light. Also, we make links between our electricity unit and D&T where we design and make moving fairground rides;
- As geographers, we learn about different regions in the UK and how to use ordnance survey maps, also we study South America and make comparisons between there and home;
- As historians, we learn about World War I and we lead the whole school in the Remembrance service. As well as this, we are lucky enough to have a visit from a World War I soldier, William, he provides us with a first-hand account of life in World War I. Also, we learn about Crime and Punishment through the different eras of history.
- In RE, we explore Advent and Lent and make connections between Christianity and other faiths. We explore spirituality in these lessons and we are fortunate enough to explore different values in workshops led by Jo from CIST.
During the school year we head off on a residential, this is where we build on fundamental skills like team-work, problem solving, peserverance and resilience - it is lots of fun! We are also visited by the Fire Sevice, the Youth Offending Team, Freddie Fit and Stockport County and these people teach us about being safe and healthy.
After SATs, we have lots of exciting things to look forward to, we put together an end of year show, we have a post-SATs treat to look forward to and then we end our time at St Matthew's with the spectacle that is our leavers' service.
It is an action packed year but one we hope the children will remember for a long time to come!
